CUSTOM IRONWORK · GREATER BOSTON

Custom Iron Fences in Greater Boston

Define the edge of your property without losing its character. Custom fencing brings order, rhythm, and a considered connection to your entrance.

A boundary that complements the property

A fence can shape the whole experience of a front yard, side passage, or shared outdoor space. Its rhythm becomes part of the streetscape, while its gates influence how the property is used every day. Boston Iron Design creates custom ironwork for Greater Boston, including fences that coordinate with gates, railings, and the surrounding architecture. We start by understanding the area you want to define.

You may want an open edge that preserves views of a garden, a more formal entrance, or a consistent design around several sides of the property. Those goals guide the pattern and proportions. Share photos from the street and from within the yard so the fence can be considered from both directions, rather than as an isolated panel.

Start with the route, then refine the pattern

A useful layout shows where the fence begins, where it ends, and where people or vehicles need to pass through. Existing walls, stairs, grade changes, trees, and utilities can affect the route. Confirm the boundary with appropriate property information; a visible old fence or planting edge is not proof of a legal property line. Boundary questions should be resolved before fabrication or installation is committed.

Once the route is understood, we can discuss how the design handles corners and changes in level. Repeated vertical elements create a different character from a denser ornamental pattern. Posts, top rails, and gate details should feel related without making the composition unnecessarily complicated. A design that works in a single photograph still needs to work across the full run.

Make the gate part of the fence design

A fence is only as convenient as the openings planned into it. Think about daily pedestrian access, deliveries, maintenance equipment, and the route to other parts of the property. A small omission in the layout can create an awkward routine later. Bring up future landscape or driveway changes so they can be considered before the gate positions are finalized.

Matching does not have to mean identical. A gate may use the same main pattern with a slightly different top profile or a focused decorative detail. The hardware, support arrangement, and direction of movement need to suit the site. If an entrance has a slope or limited clearance, that should be part of the early conversation rather than a problem discovered during installation.

Understand the finish and the site conditions

Exterior metalwork needs a finish appropriate to its material and exposure. Ask what preparation and coating are proposed, how any site work affects the finish, and what care instructions apply afterward. We will explain the available approach during your estimate. Avoid choosing a finish only by its color; the specified system and care requirements are part of the purchase.

The installation also depends on the ground and surrounding construction. Existing concrete, walls, planting, drainage, and underground services may require coordination before posts or supports are placed. Let us know if there are restrictions on access or working hours. If excavation or other preparation is required, the scope should identify responsibility for that work and the checks needed before it begins.

Compare fencing estimates by the whole scope

Total length matters, but height, pattern, number of gates, corners, site changes, finish, and installation access can change the cost considerably. Removal of existing fencing and restoration of disturbed surrounding areas should be addressed explicitly. Two estimates can look similar while covering very different amounts of preparation and finishing work. Ask for inclusions and exclusions in writing.

For your first request, include the city, approximate length, a sketch of the desired route, and photos of the existing boundary. Mark gate locations and explain the purpose of the fence. If the design is intended for a pool or another regulated use, say so immediately; no general decorative fence design should be assumed suitable for that application. We will discuss next steps, approvals to clarify, and a project-specific schedule.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

A few things you might be wondering.

Can you make a fence and gate as one design?

Yes, a coordinated fence and gate can be discussed together. Share the full intended layout, including pedestrian and vehicle access points.

Will a metal fence provide complete privacy?

Open metal patterns preserve visibility. The level of screening depends on the final design, so explain your privacy goal before a pattern is selected.

Who confirms the property line?

The property boundary needs to be established using appropriate property or survey information. Resolve any uncertainty before the fence location is finalized.
